We install lights for a living, so take the framing with appropriate salt. But there is a real answer here, and for some houses it is "do it yourself."
When DIY is genuinely fine
- Single-storey house with a straightforward roofline
- Safe, level ground to set a ladder on
- You already own lights that work
- You are comfortable on a ladder and not working alone
- A modest, simple design is what you want
If that is your situation, a weekend and a box of clips will do the job.
When it stops being a good idea
Height
This is the real one. Ladder falls are the most common serious home-maintenance injury, and they cluster in exactly this activity at exactly this time of year. A second storey changes the risk profile completely, and a steep pitch changes it again.
Ice and cold
In Halifax you are often working on a surface that was wet this morning. Cold hands, cold ladder feet, and a roof edge that looks dry and is not.
Electrical load
Multiple strands, outdoor extension cords and an exterior outlet that may or may not be GFCI-protected. This is the part people think about least and should think about more.
If the honest version of your plan involves standing on the top rung of a ladder on a slope in the dark, that is the moment to get a quote instead.
What you are actually paying for
Not just labour. The difference shows up in a few specific places:
Lights cut to your house
Retail strands come in fixed lengths, so a DIY roofline almost always ends with a gap or an awkward overlap. When we supply lights they are cut and terminated to your exact runs. That one thing is most of the visual difference between a professional job and a home job.
Commercial-grade hardware
The strands and clips we use are rated for a full season of Atlantic weather. Big-box strands are generally built to a price for a few seasons of light use.
Nothing left on your house
Clips are removed at takedown. No screws, no staples, no adhesive marks on your fascia in March.
Mid-season failures are our problem
A section goes out in mid-December, we come back out. You are not on a ladder in the dark trying to find a dead bulb.
Storage
Lights stored badly fail early. We store them labelled and sorted, which is a significant part of why a leased set stays reliable year after year.
The middle option people miss
If you already own lights you like, you do not have to choose between a full-service package and doing it all yourself. We install customer-owned lights at $8 per linear foot — you keep the lights you have, and nobody in your household goes up a ladder.
The actual decision
Single storey, good access, simple design, comfortable with heights: do it yourself and spend the money elsewhere. Two or more storeys, steep pitch, awkward access, or any hesitation about the ladder: get it quoted. A consultation is free and takes twenty minutes.
